Traditionally, dualism illustrates the conceptual division of the world into categories: it is the exact recognition of a reality pointing to univocal, absolute classifications. This would be a "natural" tendency, rather than an intellectual or conscious effort-as Douglas R. Hofstadter has pointed out(HOFSTADTER, Douglas R., Godel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid, New York: Basic Books,1979) -which despite its apparent rational component occurs far below the upper strata of thought:
"The essence of dualism is founded on language and consists fundamentally of words, mere words, articulated meanings meant to express an essential and intrinsically dichotomic "idea," since each word tends to represent as then a fixed category of meanings."
Today, however, old substantive categories repeatedly clash with the undisciplned conditions of mixtures and slippages that, in all their manifestations, call for the brutal (and exciting at the sametime) dissolution of the old dichotomic divisions which, for long years, were paradigms of our ideological and disciplinary baggage: exterior/interior, natural/artificial, public/private, order/chaos, determinate/indeterminate, formal/informal, routine/extraordinary, domestic/universal, particular/general, discontinuous/linked, open/closed, etc. All comprise of simultaneous voices and, therefore, mixed actions, and possible experiences. These "dual" voices are as ambiguous as they are explicit, born of unnatural couplings between formerly opposing terms which, nonetheless, are today fused in mongrel - bastardised. They are operations that provoke another type of more fertile situation creating new-and more intriguing - meanings; but also newand more "uncodified"- principles associated with the capacity for hybridisation - and transfusion - of the contemporary project.
These fusions of former dichotomies do not seek to construct through contradiction compositions - or extravagances (the latter would be the Venturian option, more akin to aesthetic irony than to operative paradox) - but rather through interactions capable of reconciling - of making coexist - n the same hybrid framework twin - coupled- phenomena, the more paradoxical the more, apparently, impossible.
